Dreaming your Death

Her mother wanted to make her a Doctor. Mother took loans and pains to get her a seat in the medical college. She had been class topper all her life and she had lived in a thatched hut all her life. The roads made of cement, tar or asphalt was something she had never seen before she had come to the city where her new college was. She had just had her first train journey while coming to the city. Her father managed to collect enough money for her hostel stay. They made her understand that she shouldn't leave the hostel in any case, even for holidays because they wouldn't be able to afford it.
She met many like her in her college. Some alone had rich family background. She had the boldness and courage of any common villager. Her friends in the new hostel told her about ragging of the juniors by the seniors. The seniors would say what they wanted the juniors to do and bully them into doing it. If in case a junior disagreed, he or she was punished horribly. She knew that ragging was forbidden by law and the deans wouldn't allow it. She had vaguely heard of sons of rich men and powerful politicians who disregarded all this and then sheperded his friends to rag the first year juniors, but she didn't deem it possible. Newspaper reports never came on such matters. Papers didn't want rich, powerful and influential enemies. Even the mass media was powerless against such people in the worlds largest democracy.
She did not go for the ragging with her friends when her whole batch was asked to come to the hall in the old building. That night she was drugged and raped. Next morning she did not know anything, she had a dreamy peaceful sleep. When it became night she wanted something badly but she didn't know what. The seniors came and gave her something and the moment she had it she knew that it was exactly what she wanted. She didn't know that it was called Heroin, an addictive narcotic and illegal drug; made from opium (poppy). The seniors wanted money for giving her the 'dream thing'. She gave them her hostel fees and later on, her college fees.
Ten months later when the fees was long overdue, the parents got a call that their dear daughter was in hospital with a baby by her side, her own baby. Dean couldn't take any action, police had told him that it was the minister's son.
Media made a ruckus when the girl called up and announced her suicide.
She did what she told even before the friends in her next room could reach her after hearing the news. At long last the culprits were caught. The family of the culprits recieved lakhs from the minister's vast hoard of black money. The real culprit, the minister's son escaped without a scratch. The 'culprits' families lived happily ever after. The police solved another case using the modern method of DNA testing of the baby.
